Pondering the Future of Art and Media in “The Dark Age 2.0”

Brighton, UK CG artist Chris Cousins examines questions of cultural ownership and commodity in the digital age by imagining a museum of the future where access to art of all kinds is strictly controlled.

Chris Cousins: “I tried hard to avoid the ‘information needs to be free!’ statement – obviously authors/musicians, etc should expect to get paid when people use their works.

“Copyright isn’t the issue. The main thorn in my side that kicked this one off was the recent move to subscription software – which feels a lot like stealth ransom-ware – ‘Your files are only able to be opened by you when you keep paying us money.’

“Obviously there’s some hyperbole here – I don’t expect to see galleries of empty picture frames. But it’s a worrying trend, so I thought I’d explore it through the way I know how.”
