Stockholm directors againstallodds, whose character-centric work ranges from an adaptation of Paddington Bear to the world’s sweetest security guard, explore a cartoon-noir aesthetic in their new passion project “The Misfortune Cookie”.
CDs Derek Picken, Niklas Rissler, and Kevin Grady at againstallodds: “As commercial animation directors, we wanted to stay close to the craft from a hands-on POV. The technique was chosen due to skills in the studio and the desire to keep it to a small team.
“The film was created over a period of three years and largely done in the downtime between commercial jobs. It started as an experiment in style, then we crafted the story around a bad joke.
“We divvied up the tasks so that people could work under their own steam as we knew it wasn’t something we could schedule.
“We got our friends helping out with everything from borrowing render nodes from Milford Animation’s render farm to music/sound and VO work. All in all, it was a nice and fun collaboration between friends and colleagues.”
