Merging found footage with an eerie acid-dipped take on classic cartoons, director/animator Marcos Sánchez spins up a magical alternate universe for “Grey to Green” by Korean pop singer Lydia Lee.
Marcos Sánchez in Santiago, Chile: “[This was] a music video commissioned by the artist herself. There was no real brief. It was more of a collaboration between two artists.
“The goal was to create a video using found footage and animation, which conveyed themes present in the song. To me, the song speaks about disenchantment and optimism. It somewhat relates to growing up too.
“I thought about those concepts when looking and assembling the footage. Later, for the animation process, I was inspired by old Disney movies, thinking about the lost innocence and naiveté that they convey, along with that hidden sense of dread they contain through their relation to old fairy tales.
“Integrating animation and found footage was a challenge. It was important for me they appeared as belonging to the same realm. I accomplished it through the use of several filters and color correction in After Effects and a careful selection of digital brushes in Toonboom.”
